Spending 5 nights here at start of November.....2 nights Hanoi / 2 in Halong Bay and 1 back in Hanoi.

Think I'm sorted for the Halong Bay bit, but any recommendations for the days in Hanoi would be welcome.

I've done a few days in HCMC.....is Hanoi much different?

Re: Vietnam
Lived there off and on for 2 years, traveled from the Chinese border to Cambodian border overland in one direction or the other 3 times.

If you genuinely want some decent advice on hotels and places to visit feel free to whomail me and I'll get back to you. Otherwise good luck planning a trip listening to this lot on here.

Don't disagree with that. Always going to be a few trying to scam tourists especially at night around Pham Ngu Lao.

Be good to meet up for a beer or two when you have some time.

My dad was there in the 60's, they definitely weren't friendly then, mind you he was in the US Air Force so that might have something to do with it.

Wouldn't say they are unfriendly , just different and if they can knock you for a couple of quid they will in my experience

Didn't find BKK the same a lot more western , but the Mrs loves it here and Im here for the next 5 years hopefully will grow on me

Re: Vietnam
Well you live there. Next time I come over I'll observe. But I'd still wager if for example you went to buy some street food and stood there for say 5 minutes there wouldn't be any banter or attempts to share a joke and probably not even a smile.

Re: Vietnam
Sure compared to the Thais probably everywhere is more distant.

Anyone can only speak from their personal experience but I could never label the Vietnamese as unfriendly. I have experienced hospitality from Vietnamese (including relatively poor ones) that I have never come across anywhere else.

*distant*

Re: Vietnam
Monk - Most definitely more distance and reserved then Thais, less confidence if you like than Thai people, less exposure to them, and as you say the langauage barrier, etc...all of that gives an impression of non-friendly which is maybe a bit harsh, but pretty much everyone I know that has been there has said the same.

Re: Vietnam
My personal experience is that the people are very friendly. Although English is becoming a second language it isn't as widely spoken as in Thailand so communication can be more of an issue. I don't see any animosity from the war.

HCMC is very different from BKK (which I only know as an occasional tourist) and most seem to like one or the other rather than them both.

Re: Vietnam
Balders - Spot on about the people, it was very evident when I've been there. I didn't find them friendly or warm at all, like they didn't even want to acknowledge you. Others I know have said the same, but then again maybe we are spoiled in Thailand and it's the norm? One theory is that they just don't like Westerners after the war, and some will just assume that you're American. Apart from that I like it there.

Do you know how long you are there for?

Re: Vietnam
Been working here for 4 weeks now HCMC

Prefer Bangkok Thailand by a long way

More things to do , friendlier people in Thailand

Go to hoi an. You have a beautiful old town, beach and get a crap suit made up.

My favourite place was sapai, way up in the north though but if you want mountains and walks well worth the visit.
